Protecting the unique oak retable at Saint Mary’s Church.
In the heart of leafy Suffolk is Saint Mary’s church in the hamlet of Thornham Parva, which houses a priceless retable. Richard Halsey, East of England Director for English Heritage says “The Thornham Parva Retable is a great national treasure”. The oak altar-piece is thought to have been created in the 1330s and it has recently undergone an extensive eight-year restoration programme. The Retable is irreplaceable, so the conservationists needed to be certain that the masterpiece was housed in a secure environment, protected from the risk of fire. The Envirograf® passive fire protection product range was chosen, to give robust protection and high quality finish. The products were supplied by Fire Prevention Products (Essex & Suffolk), the architect for the project was Tony Redman of Whitworth & Co, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and work was carried-out by specialist builder RJ Hogg.
