FIRE PROTECTION FOR DUCTING

National Oceanography Centre

Upgrading fire performance of ducting at The National Oceanography Centre

When the local authority stipulated that the ventilation riser in this building should provide one hour fire protection, Fire & Thermal Installation Services Ltd were contracted to carry out upgrade works.

They needed to add protection to the riser which runs from the 4th to the 8th floor plus branches that serve the 4th floor kitchen where they also added an access/inspection hatch to assist future service requirements.

Due to the significant size and quantity of the ducting, Envirograf used a fibre-free intumescent material to produce a thermal duct wrap sized specifically to suit the scale this project.

Each horizontal join in the duct wrap was covered with 100mm self-adhesive intumescent tags and, for added security, every one metre high section of wrap was fitted with two 50mm metal fixing straps.

Works were carried out in accordance with the requirements of standards EN13501-2:2007 and EN1366-3:2009.
