Wall and Ceiling Passive Fire Protection

Intumescent fire protection sleeves to protect cables, pipes and trunking

Achieving wall and ceiling fire protection using Product 110 – Firoblock Intumescent Sleeves.

This year, Envirograf attended a site that required full refurbishment of an old office block into newly built and fitted luxury apartments. On this site, the Building Control Officer required passive fire protection products for all compartmental walls and ceilings.
With 40 years of experience and knowledge, we were able to help out with providing the correct products for each section.
As the photos will show, Envirograf provided the contractor Showtec, with Product 110 – Firoblock Intumescent Sleeves. Fitted around the internal apertures of their letterbox system, used to feed the main utilities into each flat from the communal corridor. The sleeves tightly fit into the cutout area. Either going through the block wall or sit flush within 2 layers of plasterboard. In the case of a fire, the intumescent material will expand, thus sealing the pipe at either end and preventing firespread. They also absorb heat to help prevent services, pipes, and cables from overheating. Highly flexible, moisture resistant, and feature acoustic properties.
In some instances, the fitment around the outside of the sleeve and the wall has a small gap. A bead of Product 58 – Intumescent Acrylic and Acoustic Mastic around the outside of the intumescent will ensure full fire protection. These products as well as all others within the Envirograf range are fully tested to either BS (British) or EN (European) standards.
Furthermore, Showtec required fire protection for riser cupboards on each floor. As well as protection for other utilities that penetrated walls. These utilities were at differing levels to the letterbox section above flat doors. At the end of the day, these were site problems that were easily solvable using Envirograf products.

The feedback from the contractors on site was really positive. Firstly, that Envirograf provided bespoke sizes of all products to aid their workload. Products were available on-site the next day no matter the quantity of each product ordered. When required, Envirograf were on hand to visit the site, ensuring that contractors had the correct items. Moreover, that the products had been correctly installed. We look forward to working with Showtec again on future projects.
