Protecting wooden Anglers’ Lodge

Log cabin fire protected

Log cabin clubhouse and leisure facility at Eye Kettleby Lakes.

Lakeside refreshments for anglers have often conjured up an image of curled-up sandwiches and a flask of lukewarm tea with which to wash them down. However, Martyn Lomas (who operates a fishery at Eye Kettleby Lakes near Melton Mowbray) decided to scrap that worn-out stereotypical image and introduce a log cabin clubhouse and leisure facility to ensure that a day’s fishing becomes a special, relaxing experience. The facility covers an area of approximately 400 square metres, and the building is made from 200mm round wood logs. This log construction will also contain a fishing tackle store and an office, shop, function room, restaurant, and bar. Dave Winchester of Rural Accommodations, Preston, (Phone: 01772 252581 – Email: info@rurala.co.uk) was contacted to design a wooden building to Martyn’s requirements. The project started in November 2005. As the facility was to be built mainly from wood and had a kitchen area, it was obvious that strict fire prevention measures were needed, so Dave contacted fire consultant Sandra Hale of CH Materials Ltd, Morecambe during the first-fix stage in March 2006, fire prevention advice. Owing to accidental or malicious fire risk, Sandra suggested using Envirograf® Product 92 (ES/VFR flame retardant). This coating system complies with BS476 Parts 6 & 7 (1989) Class 0 and Class 1 spread of flame requirements (tested on a number of surfaces), and Classification A1-B/S1/d0 of European Standard EN13501-1 Parts EN13823: 2002 single burn test (SBI) and EN11925-2: 2002 ignitability. The Envirograf® Product 92 (ES/VFR) water-based coating system is available in both clear or white finishes and it is very quick and simple to apply by brush, roller, or spray. This flame retardant system has also been used on many other projects, to protect bamboo, chipboard, decorative laminates, plywood, MDF, melamine, timber, etc.
