Non-fibrous board used for fire protecting structural steel elements.

Any steel structural members in office buildings could be susceptible to distortion or collapse in a fire, particularly when situated in fire-risk areas such as boiler rooms, kitchens, etc. John Ault of building contractors Drake and Plant Ltd, Felixstowe was contacted by Suffolk Coastal Services Ltd to ensure complete fire protection of the heating boiler room at the headquarters of Suffolk Coastal District Council. Drake and Plant Ltd contacted fire consultant Vic Lewis of Fire Prevention Products (Essex and Suffolk) to formulate a fire safety action plan to protect the room. Vic recommended Envirograf® Product 91, a lightweight, non-fibrous board for fire protection of steel. This product can be easily cut with a sharp knife and faced with decorative laminate if required. It can achieve in excess of one hour fire protection and is applied to the steel by use of a special adhesive/sealant. Drake and Plant Ltd found this product especially useful for a number of areas of the boiler room that would otherwise have been difficult to access for a fire protection spray coating to be applied.
