Door upgrading products used in  Paladian style Stanmer House in East Sussex.

In 1713, the architect Nicholas Dubois was commissioned to build Stanmer House in East Sussex in the Palladian style. This fine house was kept in good order for many years. However, during World War 2, the house suffered greatly and was even used for target practice by the British military. Despite the forces’ best efforts to destroy this great house, and its many years of subsequent dereliction, Stanmer House defied nature and has been delightfully renovated into a centre for conferences, receptions, and weddings by Brighton-based Cherrywood Investments.

Over many years, the weather and vandalism destroyed some of the fine timber doors, so it was necessary to replace them with new doors, matching the remaining original doors in this listed building. Many of the original doors were only 35mm thick, and conventional protection could not be fitted into these rather narrow linings. Architect Phil Purvis of Purvis Draughting contacted John Wallis of County Passive Fireseals to find a way of upgrading the doors. John suggested the use of Envirograf® Product 38 intumescent membrane paper, to provide the necessary fire protection to the doors. The intumescent material was bonded to a plywood sheet in the workshop, and then cut to size and installed in the doors by ACE Joinery of Portslade.

The risk sides of the doors were then coated with Envirograf® Product 42 HW intumescent coatings on the stiles and rails. A limited number of salvaged doors with raised-and-fielded panel doors were treated with Envirograf® Product 103 coating system for 30 minutes fire protection. Fire and smoke sealing was also provided around the curved door heads by fitting flexible Envirograf® Product 69 surface-mounted fire and smoke seals which were much easier to fit than rebated seals.
